New building specialty on the construction of high-rise buildings openes in NI ISTU

In 2013, NI ISTU begins to enroll students for a new and rewarding profession "The construction of high-rise and large-span buildings and structures" in the field of "Construction of unique buildings and structures." The subdepartment of construction industry of the Institute of Architecture and Construction at ISTU will release such specialists. According to the associate professor of the subdepartment, Pavel Shustov, the new specialty received 14 budget places. The cost of commercial training is 64 thousand rubles a year. Duration of training is six years.

Applicants who are good in mathematics, physics, computer science and chemistry are recommend to enter to the new specialty.

According to P. Shustov, the need for specialists in this profile is dictated by the modern world trends: "The last two decades Russia actively builds unique buildings. The world practice have already examples of construction of buildings the height of which is 600-800 meters, the British plan to build a tower of a mile by 2020. More and more buildings are being to be built in the 15-20 floors in Irkutsk, we're not building five-story buildings. Perhaps floors will grow, and at the same time spans of industrial and civil buildings will increase as well. Therefore, a first step to develop a new direction is this specialization. "

The basis of the new specialty is the educational program "Industrial and civil construction", which has been successfully implemented at the university since 1956. According to P. Shustov, the program has been significantly revised, amended and adapted to the new direction. Future specialists are preparing for such professional activities as surveying, engineering, construction and project design work, production and technology, production and management activities, etc. The program provides an in-depth study of theoretical and applied mechanics.

Students will have to master 71 disciplines in total. Curriculum provides 9 practices, including computer and design ones. Before getting a diploma, future engineers will have to pass 40 exams, 51 credits, 13 year projects, develop and defend a thesis project.

"Traditional technology of construction of buildings and structures cannot be fully applicable to the unique objects. It is completely different base of mechanization; more stringent organizational, technological regulations are operated here. In this case, the main way to bring the designs to the design position – mean of "building" is not enough", said P. Shustov. "Another approach to organizational principles of construction is in demand. Efficient integration of structures, uniformity, high factory readiness, simple end joints - this applies only to installation work".

According to the P. Shustov, graduates of specialty "The construction of high-rise and large-span buildings and structures" must have the necessary knowledge and skills to perform sketch, technical and operational projects of unique objects, to know the legal framework and methods of computation systems engineering equipment, and be able to organize the process of building of data objects.
